Director, Pipeline and Portfolio Strategy (PPS), Program Manager (PgM)
The Director, PPS Program Manager (PgM) is the strategic and operational integrator for development through commercialization programs, accountable for translating asset strategy into integrated plans and ensuring those plans are operationalized through disciplined execution, transparent communication, and effective governance readiness. This role applies program and project management best practices across the asset lifecycle, from asset team formation through commercialization, by building integrated timelines, scenario plans, dashboards, and risk/issue/decision systems; enabling high-quality decision-making and governance; and strengthening cross-functional team performance.
Key Responsibilities
Scope & Complexity
- Lead highly complex assets and/or portfolio initiatives with material strategic impact, managing significant cross-functional interdependencies.
- Operate with broad autonomy to shape program direction, not just execute. Set standards, make tradeoffs, and drive outcomes.
Strategic Planning
- Partner with Asset/IBT and functional leaders to translate asset/portfolio strategy into aligned goals, strategic deliverables, and integrated scenarios.
- Maintain visibility to interdependencies, risks, and cross-portfolio impacts; operate effectively in ambiguity by surfacing decision points and driving timely tradeoffs to sustain momentum.
Operational Execution
Timeline, Resource, and Budget Management & Oversight
- Build and maintain integrated master timelines (critical path, KIPs, key milestones) with explicit assumptions, risks, and enterprise dependencies.
- Lead scenario planning, integrated status reporting, and financial/FTE tradeoff discussions; align functional data and execution readiness through PRIME/TARC and partner forums, escalating issues/decisions as needed.
Risk, Issue, and Decision Management
- Identify, document, and actively manage high-impact risks/issues to strategy, timing, and budget—facilitating routine reviews, mitigation plans, and escalation when thresholds are met.
- Drive cross-functional decision discipline (capture, rationale, implications) and dependency management, leveraging analytics where needed to enable timely, aligned decisions across all forums.
Facilitation, Governance Readiness & Meeting Excellence
- Provide end-to-end meeting excellence for teams and governance forums—agendas, pre-reads, facilitation, minutes, and disciplined action/decision follow-through.
- Ensure governance readiness and high-stakes decision support by framing options/implications, ensuring data integrity, and organizing readiness reviews (e.g., launch/competitive).
Communication, Stakeholder Management & Influence
Communication and Influence
- Build trust and alignment across a complex stakeholder ecosystem through clear, consistent program communications (objectives, plans, timelines, status) and accountability for commitments.
- Influence without authority by synthesizing inputs across forums into decision-ready updates, closing communication gaps, escalating appropriately, and maintaining team reporting/collaboration systems.
Building High-Performing Teams & Managing Team Dynamics
- Build and sustain high-performing cross-functional teams by reinforcing role clarity, collaboration norms, inclusive participation, and accountability.
- Navigate team dynamics and resolve conflict constructively by structuring fact-based discussions, bridging gaps, and removing execution barriers so teams meet commitments.
Program and Project Management
- Embed program/project management standards, tools, metrics, and governance disciplines consistently across programs to improve execution rigor and transparency.
- Drive continuous improvement at scale—capture lessons learned, coach PMs/leaders, and partner with PPS/Portfolio/Functions to evolve enterprise program management frameworks and capabilities.
Skills & Capabilities
Background/Experience
- Extensive cross-functional program/project management experience across the asset lifecycle (development through commercialization), with strong command of PM tools and systems.
- Recognized enterprise role model with strategic thinking, influence, and values-based leadership in a matrixed environment.
