Job Summary
The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program (ITLP) welcomes applications for our IT Director! The director leads all IT-related responsibilities and efforts for the ITLP and formultiple other education-focused spaces and programs in the College of Engineering and Applied Sciences (CEAS) at the University of Colorado, Boulder. They provide strategic leadership, staff supervision and operations management for both software engineering and system engineering teams. The director’s responsibilities include partner and customer relationships, software development lifecycle management, classroom technology and support, system integrations, application management, server administration, security management, desktop support, and oversight of the CEAS Cloud Computing platform. The director determines how the ITLP can best meet its strategic and operational goals through the acquisition and deployment of technology resources. They create, implement, and ensure compliance with IT policies and procedures in accordance with CU system and campus requirements. They are responsible for the development, implementation, and support of all software, hardware, and data systems and applications used by the ITLP to support the myriad needs of the organization. The director collaborates with the Office of Information Technology (OIT) and other groups on the Boulder campus and University Information Systems (UIS). This position reports directly to the ITLP Director and is a member of the ITLP’s senior leadership team to determine the ongoing needs and strategic direction of technology and educational initiatives in the ITLP and CEAS. What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Relationship Management and Service Support Delivery
- Creates and operationalizes the overall relationship andsupport-management strategy for the ITLP and its ~25 professionalstaff and 50+ student employees who support 100,000+ engagementtouch-points with 5,000+ unique students and 130+ courses eachyear. Similarly, sets strategy for the hands-on education spaces inthe Idea Forge, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering,Integrated Design Engineering, Electrical Engineering, andWilliams Village.
- Develops and implements a strategy for supporting the specialized IT needs of faculty and students enrolled in courses that span 10+ departments or programs.
- Confers with other teams within the ITLP and supported units in CEAS to understand business requirements and leverage this feedback to inform strategic and daily delivery of services in the most efficient, forward-thinking and accountable way.
- Builds relationships with other programs, departments, and colleges at CU Boulder in addition to external schools, vendors, business units, and other academic support organizations to understand priorities, capabilities, and resources as they apply to engineering environments.
- Ensures delivery of high-quality, customer-focused services that are in alignment with standards in process, design,architecture, and operations and that enable the ITLP to meet its strategic goals and priorities. In partnership with the system-engineering and software-engineering technical team leads, translates user requests and finds creative solutions to technical challenges.
Staff Leadership and Supervision
- Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates a multi-disciplinary team of System Engineers and Software Engineers,consisting of 5-7 professionals (direct) and numerous student employees (indirect).
- Ensures processes, procedures, and an environment of innovationand support are in place for staff positions, ensuring performancegoals are met in a timely manner, project tasks are completed,independent initiative and creativity is celebrated, and crosstraining is in place to ensure redundancy in overall supportservices.
Department Operations
- Sets and implements the overall IT strategy of the ITLP and itssupport of over 5,000 unique students each year across 25+different engineering and non-engineering majors. Sets andimplements the IT vision for six other CEAS units (servingthousands of students annually) in the IT team’s supportportfolio.
- Oversees the ITLP’s IT operations in its support of dailydelivery and continual improvement of IT services including partnerand customer relationships, software development lifecyclemanagement, classroom technology and support, system integrations,desktop support, security management, application management,server administration, and oversight of the CEAS Cloud Computingplatform.
- Defines and delivers strategies for departmental planning,resource allocation, staff utilization, policy making, technologyinfrastructure, SDLC, and the adoption of technology.
- Collaborates with ITLP project leaders to identify and meet allIT needs for central initiatives, such asTeachEngineering.org.
- Manages all aspects of IT service agreements with externalvendors, OIT, and other college units, including service agreementsfor the hands‑on education spaces in the Idea Forge, AerospaceEngineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Integrated Design Engineering, and Williams Village. Thisincludes managing the ITLP’s audio/visual equipment and servicepartnership with campus’s central A/V team.
- Collaborates and coordinates with UIS, campus OIT, ITLP andCEAS staff, faculty, and vendors on technical architecture designand IT policy, including security.
- Manages crisis situations that may involve complex technicalhardware or software problems occurring after hours, on weekends,or during holidays.
- Proactively learns new skills, systems, and emerging AI toolsto enhance ITLP operations, improve staff efficiency andproductivity, and acts as a technical consultant and advisor onchallenging problems.
Applications, Web, and Data Services
- Responsible for the overall vision and execution of the ITLP’s digital ecosystem, including its website, custom applications, datacollection and reporting systems, ticketing, documentation, and storage systems.
- Sets the vision and strategy for data-collection, integration,storage, and reporting systems for the ITLP and its 100,000+engagement touchpoints with students each year (workshop participation, computer logins, use of 3D printers/lasercutters/manufacturing center/electronic center, etc.). Similarlysets the data and reporting strategies for the other CEAS units inthe IT team’s portfolio.
- Ensures all systems meet campus secure computingstandards.
- Champions and oversees a wide range of custom and third-partysoftware applications and data systems within the ITLP andsupported units.
- Supervises the administration (maintenance, architecture, andbackups) of web and database servers (both hardware and virtualservers).
- Creates and approves IT practices and procedures for ensuringplatform and operational stability of engineering-focusedapplications and curricula.
- In collaboration with the software-engineering technical teamlead, evaluates and prioritizes all user requests for customapplications, reporting, and other requests that fall outside thescope of normal releases.
- Oversees all technical aspects—including the design, structure,and implementation—of the ITLP website, TeachEngineering.org, andother web applications.
College and Campus IT Partnerships
- Facilitates open and collaborative discussions with CEASleadership and the Office of Information Technology about CEAS andcampus IT plans.
- Works with college and campus partners to identify and, wherepossible, eliminate systemic barriers to enable the ITLP and CEASunits to employ various centrally provided IT solutions.
- Be a member of various college- or campus-wide technologycommittees, specifically those related to the campus’ teaching andlearning mission.
Member of the Campus IT Director Forum and Secure Computing Functional Lead
- Serve as a member of the campus IT Director Forum and as unit'sstrategic liaison to OIT, fostering a culture of risk awareness,operational accountability, and proactive securityintegration.
- Contributes to operational decision-making for campus ITservices, promotes improved user satisfaction, and enhances thevalue of IT services.
- Provides input on university-wide projects and initiatives bymaking recommendations to IT governance and engaging in projectworking groups.
- Promotes shared decision-making to improve campus IToperational resilience and security posture.
- Ensures unit alignment with CU policy, ensuring practicesreflect CU standards, and any exceptions are managed within theappropriate framework.
What You Should Know
This position has an anticipated work schedule of Monday – Friday during regular business hours, and will work outside of regularbusiness hours as‑needed. This position may be eligible for a hybrid work modality and would require at least 3 days a week to bein person.
What We Can Offer
The salary range for this position is $130,000 - $137,750 annually.

What We Require
- Graduation from college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.Equivalent combination of education and experience may substituteon a year for year basis.
- 4 years of senior‑level experience managing technology resources in an IT environment.

What We Would Like You to Have
- 8 or more years of professional experience in informationtechnology, preferably in higher education, in an academicenvironment, and\/or in an engineering environment.
- Supervision or managerial experience.
- Desirable to have some of the following:
- Software engineering experience.
- Systems administration\/engineering experience.
- ITIL 4\/5 Foundations Certification.
