Position
Principal Bridge Engineer – Boston, MA or Westwood, MA office. Lead a team of professionals across infrastructure and transportation projects within our Boston/Greater Boston area offices.
Responsibilities
- Act as discipline task lead; coordinate with staff to ensure ongoing communication, project progress, and high‑quality deliverables.
- Supervise staff; participate in quality control checks; maintain quality standards; review computations, designs, and drawings.
- Develop resource estimates, budgets, and project schedules; lead in planning and management of projects.
- Provide senior technical leadership for bridge and ancillary structures, overseeing structural systems, foundations, constructability, and coordination with maintenance and traffic considerations.
- Research and develop feasible designs to meet client needs and regulatory requirements.
- Perform structural engineering analysis for bridge systems (superstructures, substructures, bearings, foundations).
- Analyze preliminary studies (traffic, environmental impacts) and develop feasible concepts to resolve issues.
- Ensure designs comply with state and federal standards and regulatory agency requirements (e.g., transportation agencies).
- Collaborate with design teams to develop detailed design documents for milestones and construction plans.
- Meet project deliverable schedules and budgets; monitor resource budgets and schedules for assigned tasks/projects.
- Assist project managers with monthly reporting and manage assignments within the resource network to ensure appropriate staff allocation.
- Engage with clients to ensure professionalism and effective communication.
- Oversee development of bridge projects using Open Bridge and other digital design tools; stay current with digital delivery methods.
- Independently evaluate and compute engineering data; supervise training and mentorship of junior staff.
- Ability to handle multiple unique assignments concurrently.
Qualifications
- A BS degree in civil engineering.
- 15+ years of experience in bridge design and design management, including superstructures, substructures, bearings, and foundations.
- Massachusetts PE license or ability to obtain.
- Proven experience in leading diverse teams, managing resources and projects.
- Strong written and oral communication skills.
- Familiarity with Federal Highway Administration and Massachusetts Department of Transportation.
- Experience with MicroStation and OpenBridge; AutoCAD and Civil 3D; P6 scheduling tools; drainage design.
- High-quality interpersonal skills, with attention to detail.

Salary is determined by location, education, experience, and skills; expected range is $156,000–$191,000.
