Vertex Design & Build is a residential design and construction company specialising in high-quality home renovations, extensions and refurbishment projects across London.
We are looking for a motivated Assistant Project Manager / Architectural Designer to join our growing team. This is a hands‑on role combining site management, project coordination and architectural design support.
The position would suit a recent architectural/construction graduate or someone at the early stage of their career who is keen to gain practical experience across the full project lifecycle, from design and procurement through to construction and completion.
The right attitude is more important than extensive experience. We are looking for someone who is organised, proactive, willing to learn and comfortable working both in the office and on construction sites.
The Role
You will work closely with the Project Manager, Directors, consultants, subcontractors and building trades to help deliver residential renovation and extension projects to a high standard.
The role will involve a combination of:
- Assisting with day-to-day project and site management.
- Attending construction sites regularly and monitoring progress.
- Coordinating with subcontractors and individual building trades.
- Assisting with programme planning and sequencing of works.
- Checking workmanship and identifying defects or issues.
- Supporting the Project Manager with site records, progress updates and reporting.
- Coordinating information between architects, engineers, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors.
- Assisting with procurement and obtaining quotations from suppliers and subcontractors.
- Reviewing drawings and specifications and helping resolve site queries.
- Preparing and amending architectural drawings and details.
- Producing plans, elevations, sections and construction details.
- Assisting with measured surveys and site measurements.
- Supporting the preparation of design and construction information.
- Attending design and project meetings.
- Helping coordinate building control, planning and consultant requirements.
- Assisting with snagging and project completion.
- Developing an understanding of construction costs, programmes and project delivery.
Key Responsibilities
Site & Project Management
- Assist the Project Manager with the day-to-day running of residential construction projects.
- Regularly visit sites to monitor progress and coordinate works.
- Liaise directly with trades and subcontractors to ensure works are completed in the correct sequence.
- Help coordinate first-fix, second-fix and finishing trades.
- Monitor quality, progress and general site standards.
- Identify potential problems early and communicate them to the Project Manager.
- Assist with maintaining project programmes and tracking outstanding works.
- Assist with site inspections, snagging and handover.
- Prepare and amend CAD drawings and architectural information.
- Assist with design development for residential extensions, renovations and refurbishments.
- Produce construction drawings and details under the direction of senior team members.
- Carry out site measurements and prepare existing-condition drawings.
- Review drawings against site conditions and identify discrepancies.
- Assist with coordination of architectural, structural and MEP information.
- Help prepare information for planning, building control and construction purposes.
Procurement & Coordination
- Assist in obtaining and comparing quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
- Help prepare scope of works and enquiry packages.
- Assist with ordering materials and coordinating deliveries.
- Communicate with suppliers and subcontractors regarding lead times and technical information.
- Maintain project trackers and assist with cost and procurement monitoring.
What We Are Looking For
- A degree or qualification in Architecture, Architectural Technology, Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Building Surveying or a related discipline.
- Strong interest in residential construction and design.
- Excellent organisational and communication skills.
- A proactive, practical and problem-solving attitude.
- Willingness to spend significant time on construction sites.
- Good attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate confidently with trades, suppliers and consultants.
- Basic understanding of construction methods and building processes.
- Ability to read and understand architectural and technical drawings.
- Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Office.
- Experience with AutoCAD is desirable.
- Knowledge of Revit, SketchUp or other design software is advantageous but not essential.
- A full UK driving licence is desirable.
Graduate Candidates
Recent graduates are encouraged to apply.
Previous experience in project management or construction is not essential. We are willing to train and develop the right candidate who demonstrates enthusiasm, reliability, initiative and a genuine interest in learning how residential projects are designed and built.
The successful candidate will have the opportunity to develop practical experience across architecture, construction, site management, procurement and project delivery, with increasing responsibility as their experience develops.
Personal Attributes
- Proactive - willing to take ownership rather than waiting to be instructed.
- Organised - able to manage multiple tasks and follow up outstanding items.
- Practical - interested in understanding how buildings are actually constructed.
- Commercially aware - keen to understand costs, procurement and project budgets.
- Detail-oriented - able to spot discrepancies and quality issues.
- A good communicator - comfortable dealing with people at all levels.
- Adaptable - able to move between office-based design work and site-based responsibilities.
- Keen to learn - genuinely interested in developing a long-term career within the construction and development industry.
This is an opportunity to join a growing company where the successful candidate can develop into a Project Manager role over time.
As experience and capability develop, responsibilities will increase to include greater ownership of individual projects, subcontractor management, procurement, programme management, design coordination and commercial aspects of project delivery.
If you are a motivated graduate or junior professional looking for a hands‑on role where you can learn how residential projects are designed and built from start to finish, we would like to hear from you.
