Sr. Project Manager – Commercial Construction
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
The Opportunity
A well-established commercial construction company in the Pittsburgh market is seeking a Project Manager with at least 5 years of commercial construction experience .
This opportunity is particularly attractive for someone who enjoys understanding how a project is actually built , not simply coordinating subcontractors from a distance.
The company performs a significant amount of its work with its own internal field teams , giving Project Managers much greater involvement in the day-to-day execution of each project. You will work directly with the people responsible for performing the work and have visibility into nearly every aspect of the construction process.
For someone with an engineering or construction management background who enjoys solving problems, understanding details, and being close to the work, this can be a very different Project Manager opportunity.
An Engineering-First Approach
The company approaches construction with an engineering mindset .
Projects are viewed as technical problems to solve—not simply schedules and subcontractor contracts to administer.
The ideal Project Manager will enjoy:
- Understanding how and why something is being built
- Breaking complex construction challenges into manageable solutions
- Thinking critically about means and methods
- Evaluating constructability
- Identifying potential issues before they become problems
- Working collaboratively with field personnel to develop better solutions
- Using data, planning, and technical knowledge to make informed decisions
A degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, or another engineering discipline would be highly valued.
Why Self-Perform Matters
Unlike many commercial contractors that subcontract nearly every portion of a project, this organization performs a meaningful amount of construction with its own workforce.
That gives the Project Manager greater ownership and a deeper understanding of the project.
Instead of simply managing contracts with outside subcontractors, you will work directly with the individuals responsible for executing the work.
That means greater involvement in:
- Planning manpower and resources
- Construction sequencing
- Means and methods
- Productivity
- Material procurement
- Scheduling
- Quality
- Safety
- Cost control
- Field execution
- Problem solving
You will see how decisions made in the office affect the work in the field and have the opportunity to work directly with your team to make adjustments.
For someone who wants to become a well-rounded construction professional , this environment provides exposure that can be difficult to gain with a traditional subcontract-heavy general contractor.
Responsibilities
The Project Manager will be responsible for the successful planning and execution of commercial construction projects, including:
- Manage projects from preconstruction and planning through final completion.
- Develop and maintain project schedules, budgets, forecasts, and cost controls.
- Work closely with superintendents, foremen, field personnel, and internal construction teams.
- Help plan manpower, materials, equipment, sequencing, and overall project execution.
- Review drawings, specifications, scopes, and technical details.
- Identify constructability concerns and develop solutions with the project team.
- Coordinate with owners, architects, engineers, vendors, and subcontractors.
- Manage project documentation, change orders, RFIs, submittals, and procurement.
- Monitor project financial performance and identify potential risks.
- Participate in project planning meetings and communicate expectations clearly to field teams.
- Maintain a strong focus on safety, quality, schedule, and client satisfaction.
Ideal Background
The company is seeking someone with:
- 5+ years of commercial construction experience
- Project Engineer, Assistant Project Manager, or Project Manager experience
- Experience working for a commercial general contractor or construction manager
- Strong technical and problem-solving abilities
- An understanding of construction drawings, specifications, and building systems
- Strong communication and organizational skills
- The ability to work effectively with both field and office personnel
- A desire to understand construction beyond the administrative side of project management
Education
A bachelor's degree in one of the following areas is strongly preferred:
- Construction Management
- Civil Engineering
- Architectural Engineering
- Mechanical Engineering
- Other related engineering disciplines
Who Will Be Successful Here?
This opportunity will likely appeal to someone who doesn't want to become a Project Manager who spends the majority of the day simply forwarding emails, processing paperwork, and managing subcontract agreements.
The company is looking for someone who is naturally curious about how things work and how things get built .
Someone who enjoys walking a jobsite, talking with the people performing the work, understanding the technical details, and figuring out better ways to execute the project will fit well.
If you have an engineering mindset combined with an interest in construction leadership , this position offers the opportunity to become deeply involved in the entire building process.
