About the Role
Our client is seeking an experienced and commercially astute Commercial Manager to oversee the financial and contractual aspects of major construction projects in the
Oxford region. This is a senior role responsible for ensuring profitability, managing risk, and maintaining strong client relationships. You will lead a team of quantity surveyors and commercial staff, providing strategic guidance on all commercial matters, including tendering, contract negotiation, cost control, and dispute resolution. The ideal candidate will possess a deep understanding of construction contracts and commercial best practices, with a proven ability to drive financial success. Key Responsibilities
- Leading the commercial strategy and financial management of construction projects.
- Overseeing tendering processes, contract negotiation, and award.
- Managing and mentoring the commercial team, including Quantity Surveyors.
- Implementing robust cost management and control systems to ensure project profitability.
- Proactively identifying and mitigating commercial risks.
- Managing contractual claims, variations, and dispute resolution processes.
- Ensuring compliance with all contractual obligations and legal requirements.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships with clients, subcontractors, and stakeholders.
- Providing commercial advice and support to project teams and senior management.
- Producing accurate financial reports and forecasts for projects.
Requirements
- Degree in Quantity Surveying, Commercial Management, Law, or a related field.
- Extensive experience (e.g., 10+ years) in commercial management within the construction industry, ideally on large-scale projects.
- In-depth knowledge of various forms of construction contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT, FIDIC).
- Strong understanding of construction finance, risk management, and procurement.
- Excellent leadership, negotiation, and communication skills.
- Proven track record of successfully managing commercial aspects of complex projects.
- Proficiency in commercial management software and MS Office Suite.
- Membership of professional bodies such as RICS or CIOB is highly desirable.
- Must be eligible to work in the UK.
