Job Overview
We are seeking an experienced Fabrication Project Manager to manage fabrication projects from award and turnover through fabrication, quality inspection, shipment, and project closeout. This position serves as the primary connection between customers, engineering, procurement, production control, quality, and shop operations.
The Fabrication Project Manager is responsible for ensuring projects are properly planned, materials and approved drawings are available when needed, fabrication stays on schedule, labor hours remain within budget, customer requirements are met, and completed work is delivered on time.
Responsibilities
Project Management & Coordination
- Manage assigned fabrication projects from award through completion and closeout.
- Review contracts, purchase orders, estimates, drawings, specifications, schedules, and project requirements.
- Lead project turnover meetings with estimating, production control, quality, procurement, and shop operations.
- Establish project milestones and fabrication completion dates.
- Maintain project schedules and communicate changes or risks that may impact delivery.
- Coordinate customer priorities with shop capacity and production schedules.
- Maintain accurate project documentation and status updates.
- Identify project risks early and develop recovery plans as needed.
Fabrication Planning & Scheduling
- Coordinate with Production Control and Shop Management to establish fabrication priorities.
- Ensure current, approved drawings and complete fabrication packages are available before work begins.
- Confirm required materials, fittings, valves, equipment, and other components are available for production.
- Monitor work-in-progress and track projects through fabrication, inspection, finishing, and shipment.
- Coordinate Carbon Steel, Stainless Steel, Miscellaneous Metals, and other fabrication work as assigned.
- Identify and resolve drawing conflicts, material issues, fabrication questions, and customer changes.
- Coordinate shipment priorities and ensure required delivery dates are met.
Cost & Labor Management
- Track estimated fabrication hours against actual hours and project progress.
- Monitor productivity, remaining labor hours, and percent complete.
- Identify potential labor or cost overruns and work with Shop Management to address them.
- Investigate variances related to rework, drawing changes, material issues, engineering changes, quality issues, equipment downtime, and scheduling conflicts.
- Maintain project forecasts and support financial reviews and project closeout.
Customer & Change Management
- Serve as the primary project contact for assigned fabrication projects.
- Provide timely updates regarding project progress, schedule, materials, RFIs, and potential delays.
- Coordinate customer inspections and required hold points.
- Track drawings, submittals, RFIs, and revisions to ensure fabrication is based on current approved information.
- Identify changes outside the original scope and assist with change order pricing and documentation.
- Ensure approved changes are communicated to all affected departments.
Quality & Procurement Coordination
- Coordinate with Quality to ensure project inspection, testing, welding, NDE, and documentation requirements are understood before fabrication begins.
- Coordinate customer and third-party inspections as required.
- Track NCRs, rework, punch-list items, and corrective actions.
- Review material requirements and coordinate procurement of critical and long-lead materials.
- Identify material shortages before they impact production.
- Ensure required quality and turnover documentation is completed before shipment.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Engineering, or related field
- Demonstrated success managing construction projects of significant scope and complexity from preconstruction through closeout
- Advanced knowledge of contracts, subcontract administration, scheduling, cost management, and change- order processes
- Strong client relationship management, negotiation, and conflict resolution skills
- Proficiency in Procore, P6 or MS Project, and financial management tools
- OSHA 30 required
