About the Role
Our client, a leading defence contractor specializing in naval systems, is seeking a highly experienced Lead Project Manager to direct pivotal development programs from their key operational base in Portsmouth, Hampshire, UK . Key Responsibilities
- Lead the planning, execution, and successful delivery of complex naval systems development projects.
- Develop detailed project strategies, encompassing scope definition, rigorous risk management, resource allocation, and precise budget control.
- Manage and mentor project teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence, collaboration, and accountability within the defence sector.
- Serve as the primary interface for key stakeholders, including government procurement agencies, prime contractors, and internal senior leadership.
- Ensure strict adherence to all defence industry regulations, security protocols, and quality standards throughout the project lifecycle.
- Oversee the integration of complex hardware and software components, managing dependencies and ensuring system interoperability.
- Proactively identify, assess, and mitigate project risks, developing robust contingency plans.
- Manage vendor and subcontractor performance, ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.
- Conduct comprehensive project reviews, capturing lessons learned to drive continuous improvement in project delivery processes.
- Prepare and present detailed project status reports, performance metrics, and financial forecasts to senior management.
Requirements
- A minimum of 10 years of progressive experience in Project Management , with a significant focus on defence, aerospace, or naval systems development.
- Demonstrated success in leading large-scale, technically complex projects with budgets exceeding £20 million within the defence sector.
- In-depth understanding of defence procurement processes, lifecycle management, and relevant regulatory frameworks.
- Exceptional leadership, strategic thinking, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Strong communication, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills, with experience engaging with government clients.
- Proficiency in defence-grade project management software and tools.
- Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (Naval, Electrical, Mechanical), Computer Science, or a related technical discipline. A Master’s degree is highly desirable.
- Professional certifications such as PMP, Defence Acquisition certifications, or equivalent are essential.
- Experience working within the Hampshire defence cluster or with major naval programmes is strongly preferred.
- Ability to work effectively within a hybrid on-site and remote work structure.
