Finance Project Manager Job Description

Finance Project Managers are in charge of planning and executing projects from a financial standpoint. Their responsibilities include creating budgets, monitoring spending, preparing reports for upper management, analyzing discrepancies and finding ways to stay within budget. 

Because budgets support every business decision, these professionals must have a strong understanding of finance and accounting. They use this knowledge to make recommendations that will save the company money or increase revenue. 

Many financial project managers also have a background in risk management, which helps them identify potential problems and develop solutions before they become costly mistakes.

Finance Project Manager Responsibilities 

  • Develop and execute implementation, change, and transition plans
  • Close out projects, conducting post implementation review, benefits review, lessons learned, publishing information, and implementing improvement opportunities
  • Prepare and execute invoice requisitions
  • Preliminary forecasting
  • Prepare project calendars, forecast, and facilitate project budget changes and monthly variance explanations on the project
  • Provide assessment on burn rates and assisting the IT project manager with their daily activity
  • Manage projects of various sizes, structures and locations
  • Develop and maintain project plans and provide regular status updates through the life cycle of the project
  • Stakeholder management across a wide spectrum of corporate life

Finance Project Manager Requirements and Qualifications 

  • Bachelor's and in Finance, Accounting, Business, Education, Project Management, Business/Administration, Computer Science, MBA, Technical, Management
  • 3-5 years of project management experience in complex business and technical environments

Preferred skills and qualifications

  • Master's Degree Finance, Accounting, Business, Education, Project Management, Business/Administration, Computer Science, MBA, Technical, Management
  • 5+ years of project management experience in complex business and technical environments
  • Relavent License or Certification PMP, PMI, CAPM, CAMS, ACP, ACAMS, CED, FIEPM, PM, CECRL
  • Knowledge/experience of global AML, anti-bribery and Sanctions regulations and legislation is preferred
  • Exposure to Global Supply Chain software implementation which may include but not limited to Transportation Management System, Warehouse Management Systems
  • Mastery of Sharepoint and the Microsoft Office suite, particularly MS Excel
